One of the education fads prevalent across Australian classrooms, and classrooms in most of the English-speaking world, involves the concept that all children have different levels of intelligence and their own unique learning styles. (For example, some children learn best by looking at pictures, by being physically active, by hands-on, tactile learning or by simply reading the printed page.) The school district uses Everyday Mathematics at the elementary level, a curriculum developed by the University Of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP, and funded by the National Science Foundation) which is heavily language oriented and aims at developing a ‘conceptual’ understanding of mathematics. Empirical documentation of effective practice will not be sufficient to effect improvements. I make frequent use of these in my writing, and the math quotes have proven to be a very popular page in the IAE-pedia.

FREE Matthew Hudson’s Doman plugin (its original location is Matthew Hudson’s Doman plugin, but many parents reported that it doesn’t work any more, so I uploaded the zip file “Doman” to make it easier) for Microsoft PowerPoint: terrific plugin that allows you to go through Step 1, 2, some of Step 3 (only two step equations: 15*2=30), step 4, and some of Step 5 (again, only two step equations and numbers are not that big). It’s like asking children to catch fish without providing them with bait, hooks, and fishing lines.

Students who have not completed Math 289A may enroll with consent of instructor.
